Home Battery Storage

Already have rooftop solar, or planning on installing rooftop solar? Consider adding home battery storage. Pairing battery storage with solar is a means to becoming energy independent and resilient against grid outages.

Don’t have solar? Standalone battery backup still makes sense as a great alternative to a gas generator in case of a power outage.

Home battery systems can provide backup for 10 to 20 hours and can be charged either by solar panels onsite (even in a power outage) or electricity from your utility.

There are plenty of financial incentives. Batteries qualify for the federal solar tax credit. This 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit applies to the cost of solar equipment and labor, including battery storage. Read more about incentives under the Deep Dive tab above.

Steps to Take

Three steps to get you started:

  1. Go to the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, Battery Storage page for a great introduction.
  2. Watch   this recording of a local battery storage presentation for a great introduction (more info on the program under the Deep Dive Tab above).
  3. Want local help? Our Electric Vehicle coach, Shelley, can also help you get started with battery backup. Fill in this form and check “battery backup.”
  4. Reach out to a qualified installer for a free consultation.
  5. Let us know how if goes if you do install battery storage, either be contacting us, or signing up and leaving a testimonial!

Deep Dive

Federal and State Incentives, 0% loans

Take advantage of an uncapped 30% Federal Tax Credit on the cost of equipment and labor (battery must have at least 3 kWh capacity).

In addition, in Massachusetts, rebates through the ConnectedSolutions program can save you even more, and make you eligible for a Mass Save® HEAT  Loan of  up to $25,000 at 0% interest over terms of up to 7  years if battery is enrolled in ConnectedSolutions.

ConnectedSolutions incentivizes customers to curtail their energy when demand on the New England electric grid is forecasted to be at its peak, known as Demand Response. Customers are compensated on a pay-for-performance basis for the average kW they curtail during dispatch events over the summer season. During a demand response event, your battery will be remotely discharged without the customer’s active participation. The discharge will be barely noticeable, if at all, by you, the home owner.

“Battery Storage for Homes & Businesses”

On Feb 28, 2023,  MetroWest Climate Solutions presented a webinar on onsite battery storage systems. In this session, Matt Honkonen of East Coast Solar provided an overview of issues to consider when installing battery storage systems in your home and/or business, including cost. The session also discussed the often-overlooked human rights abuses associated with cobalt / lithium mines in Africa. Following Matt, two local residents shared their experiences in evaluating vendors and installing battery storage systems in their homes. Watch the recording here.
