Reduce power outages due to grid overload, save on your electricity bill by avoiding the most expensive electricity sources, and reduce fossil fuel emissions, all in one!
During very hot summer days, consumers require more electricity to cool their homes. During “peak hours” when electric demand is highest, the energy grid operators are forced to use additional dirty fossil fuels from “peaker plants,” generally the dirtiest and most expensive energy sources, charging for oil and gas at extremely high rates.
We can usually predict when peak events will occur a few days in advance, so if we plan accordingly, consumers can reduce their reliance on the dirtiest and most expensive power generators. Sign up for the Green Energy Consumers Alliance’s “Shave the Peak” alerts that will remind you to use less electricity when it matters most.
Try to reduce your consumption during the alert hours, usually a four-hour period between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Check out the Steps to Take tab for more tips.
